Description

Suwannee River was among the first parks to become part of the Florida State Park system. An original 300 acres was purchased in 1936. The park now has more than 1800 acres in three counties: Suwannee, Madison, and Hamilton.

The river hums with echoes of history - of the booming days of plantations and logging empires, of the high times of paddle-wheel boats steaming up and down the river, of the long disorientation after the Civil War, and of the quiet persistence of strong pioneers who lived off this land and profited from the rivers.

South of the junction of the rivers, an earthworks was constructed by the Confederates during the Civil War. Its main purpose was to protect the railroad bridge across the Suwannee. Essential supplies, such as the beef, salt, and sugar needed to feed the Confederate armies, were shipped by rail to Georgia. Union troops dispatched from Jacksonville to capture the bridge were turned back near Olustee in a hard fought battle on February 20, 1864.

The park offers many opportunites for recreation in the "Real Florida."

The park gates close at sunset. If you plan to arrive late please contact the park prior to 5 PM on the day of your arrival. Camping fires are allowed at all times unless severe fire conditions prohibited them. Firewood is available for sale at the Ranger Station. A boat ramp affords easy access to the Suwannee River. The Suwannee River (upper) Canoe Trail and the Withlacoochee River Canoe Trail both begin in Georgia and end in the park. The Suwannee River (lower) Canoe Trail begins at the park and ends at the Gulf.

Catches of catfish, bass and panfish reward the persistent angler. A Florida freshwater fishing license is required for persons 16 years of age and older.

All trails are for foot traffic. All types of motorized vehicles and horses are not permitted on trails. 

Pets are allowed in family camping areas overnight.

Pets are not allowed in Cabins or Cabin areas. 

Pets are welcome overnight in all the camping parks. Pet rules apply. Domestic breeds of dogs, except guide or signal dogs or animals trained to assist individuals with a disability, cats, fur-bearing animals, birds and reptiles are not allowed in food-service areas, cabins or cabin areas, primitive campgrounds, beaches where bathing and swimming are permitted, either land and water portions, park buildings, playgrounds, and areas designated by park management. Captive wild species, whether native or non- native, and barnyard animals, except horses, are not allowed. Pets must be well behaved at all times and confined in the owners camping unit during quiet hours. Unconfined pets may not be left unattended for more than 30 minutes and must be on a leash no more than 6 feet long. Please do not tie pets to park vegetation, natural or manmade structures or facilities. Pet owners must pick up after their pets and properly dispose of all droppings in trash receptacles. Pets are required to be vaccinated. Horse owners and users will be asked to show their certificate of a current negative Coggins Test for all horses entering the park. A pet that is noisy, disturbing, intimidating or dangerous to other people or pets, or which damages park resources, will not be allowed to remain in the park. No one younger than 18 may camp overnight unless accompanied by a responsible adult, who will remain onsite for the period rented.

From the east: Take Interstate 10 to exit 275 towards Tallahassee. From the west: Take exit #275 on Interstate-10 towards Jacksonville. Follow the Suwanne River State Park roadway DOT signs which will direct you to the park on US 90 west.
